Badugi Glossary
Here is a glossary of commonly used phrases in Badugi Poker:
Badugi: A four card hand consisting of cards of four different cards
and four different suits.
Big Blind: The larger of the two forced bets before any
cards are dealt.
Capped: The maximum amount allowed be bet after which no
further betting is allowed, on that particular round, e.g., in limit games',
betting is capped at 4 units per person on each round.
Counterfeited: When one or more cards are rendered useless
due to the nature of each game. E.g., if you hold A2 in Hold'em and the board
reads A2454, then your 2 has been counterfeited due to the bigger board pair,
making your final hand value AA445.
First-bet Round: The first round of betting in any poker
game.
First Draw: The first round of discarding cards and taking
new ones-only available in 'Draw' games.
Half Pot Limit: A game where the maximum a player can bet is
that amount equal to half the total value of the current pot.
High Stake: The larger incremental bets allowed in the final
2 betting rounds of limit games.
Hold'em: A 7 card variation of poker where players make
their best 5-card hand using their 2 hole cards and the 5 community cards.
Incremental Units: The amounts bet in limit games are
incremental units. That is, you can only raise / increase the bet by one
extra-specified unit.
Limit Game: A game with set incremental betting units.
Low Hand Wins: Games in which the object is to get the
lowest possible hand, e.g., Ad2s3c4h in Badugi, or 23457 in Triple Draw.
Low Stake: The smaller incremental betting units used in the
first two rounds of limit games.
Off Suit: Cards of different suits, e.g., 9h5s.
One-card Hand: A hand in Badugi with an overall value of
only one card-due to counterfeiting. E.g., 4444
Pot Limit: A game where the maximum a player can bet is that
amount equal to the total value of the current pot.
Psychology: The mind games and game theory involved in most
variations of poker.
Rainbow: When cards are all different suits. E.g., a rainbow
flop would be Ah3s4d
Reshuffle of Discards: In drawing games, where there are no
cards left in the deck to draw all discards from previous rounds are reshuffled
and re-dealt as necessary.
Rounds 1 and 2: The first two rounds of betting. This phrase
is usually associated with limit games.
Second-Bet Round: The second round of betting. This phrase
is usually associated with drawing games, e.g., Badugi.
Standing Pat: Choosing to draw no cards and instead to keep
all the cards you currently hold.
Second-Draw Round: The second round of discarding cards and
taking new ones-only available in 'Draw' games.
Showdown: When hands are shown down at the end of the final
betting round and the winning hand is determined.
Side Pots: A separate pot that may develop if one or more
players are all in but others still have chips left to bet with.
Small Blind: The smaller of the two forced bets before any
cards are dealt.
Third-Bet Round: The third round of betting. This phrase is
usually associated with drawing games, e.g., Badugi.
Third Draw: The final round of discarding cards and taking
new ones-only available in 'Draw' games.
Three-Card Hand: A hand in Badugi with a final value of 3
cards due to one of your four cards being counterfeited by another, e.g.,
Ah3s4d4c-final value: Ah3s4d
Two-Card Hand: A hand in Badugi with a final value of 2
cards due to 2 of your four cards being counterfeited by 2 others, e.g.,
Ah3s4h45h-final value: Ah3s
Triple Draw: Variations of poker involving 3 chances to
discard and draw new cards. Badugi is a triple-draw game.
